3-time State Champion

There are many reasons why people start running. After moving to a new school district going into seventh grade Shalaya Kipp's mom told her she needed to "join a team to make friends." But which sport? The appeal of the cross country team not having cuts won her over so cross country was the sport she chose to "make friends." That simple request from her mom forever changed her life.

Shalaya realized early on she was "ok" at running. She had what she considers a "good start." By her freshman year at Skyline High School (Salt Lake City, UT) she ran the mile in 5:21. But it was in her sophomore year of cross country that she came into her own. Although a relative unknown and not considered a contender she beat the favorites to win the Utah State Cross Country Championship. The next two years additional state cross country titles eluded her. Each time she lost at the finish line. It made her all the hungrier to leave her mark at the Utah State Track Championships to end her high school career. With the pressure of choosing a college off her plate Shalaya won both the mile and 2-mile at States to close out her senior season.

As one might imagine Shalaya had choices when it came to college. She was recruited by Utah, Oregon, Boise State and Colorado. Why'd she choose Colorado? The answer is simple. "Mark Wetmore." She doesn't elaborate. Just "Mark Wetmore." When asked what it was about Coach Wetmore that made her choose Colorado her verbal demeanor is one of an athlete speaking about their coach with reverence, respect and awe. "You just sit down with him and he knows so much. On my recruiting trip I sat with him in a coffee shop for three hours sipping hot chocolate. The dedication to his athletes and his knowledge is amazing."

Originally Shalaya thought she'd be a 10K runner at CU but at the end of her freshman year Coach Wetmore told her he thought she could be a good steeplechaser. She figured it would be fun to try but never imagined what a journey the 3000SC had in store for her - an NCAA championship and the Olympics. And to think that this whole journey started with a smart mom telling her daughter she needed to "join a team to make friends." You can hear the whole story at Aim High!

Shalaya graduated from CU in 2014 with a degree in Integrated Physiology and Psychology. In 2013 she started her popular website as she is the quintessential foodie. Check it out for amazing recipes and pictures.

Shalaya currently trains and lives in Vancouver with her husband Stephen while she studies for her doctorate at the University of British Columbia.
